The Wiki leaks cyber attack, could it be anyone ?

"London - The reported cyber attack on the WikiLeaks website may not be the work of a state, experts said on Tuesday, while it is usually impossible to tell who is behind such an assault.

The whistle-blowing website said on its Twitter feed that it was undergoing a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, whereby multiple systems flood the target's bandwidth.

"DDoS attack now exceeding 10 gigabits a second," the whistle-blowing website said.

Dave Clemente, a cyber security analyst from Britain's Chatham House think-tank, said that a 10-gigabit DDoS attack was "relatively modest" and "could be done with probably a handful of relatively powerful computers".

He said it was "almost impossible" to work out who has launched a DDoS attack.
Not serious

"The list of possible suspects runs from a lone hacker all the way up to a nation state. There are many groups which would have an interest in targeting WikiLeaks - the list is incredibly long," Clemente said.

"It's really more of a jab in the eye than a serious challenge. This kind of attack is not going to bring down WikiLeaks."

Tony Dyhouse, cyber security director of the British-based Digital Systems Knowledge Transfer Network, said the DDoS attacks were launched "effectively as a revenge or blackmail tactic, almost always one of the two.

"Attack and then make some form of demand, or attempt to put them out of business," he said.

Such attacks use a botnet - a network computers that have been hijacked and can be controlled from a central point - which can range in size from dozens to millions. They are run by organised crime gangs, primarily for fraud purposes.

That's not to say nation states don't have them," Dyhouse said.

"They are launched by disgruntled people. We have to ask who is disgruntled at the moment.

"WikiLeaks has upset the US government, but it is very unlikely that the US government has launched a DDoS attack on the site.

Source

He said it was "very difficult" to attribute the attack to any one source. "Several times people jump to conclusions and accuse nation states. That's not to say that in some way they don't enable that action," he said.

"I certainly would not jump to the conclusion that this is the act of a state. It could indeed be a disaffected group within a country."

He said the flow of traffic could not be stopped easily.

"You have to go back upstream to try and prevent the traffic from reaching you. If it is a very poorly-crafted DDoS attack there is a way that your internet service provider will assist.

"You are looking for a common denominator that can distinguish the bad traffic from the good and then drop it - but the chances of doing that in a well-crafted attack is low."

WikiLeaks has this week begun releasing thousands of cables detailing accounts written by US diplomats. The release has infuriated Washington, which accuses the website or endangering lives.

Wiki leaks , cyber attack?

"New York - The WikiLeaks website says it's under a forceful internet-based attack, and the site is inaccessible to users in the US and Europe.
The site, which just distributed a trove of US diplomatic documents, said in a Twitter message on Tuesday morning that it's under a "distributed denial of service attack", a method commonly used by hackers to slow down or bring down sites.
The site was under attack on Sunday, but Tuesday's attack appears to be more powerful. WikiLeaks said the malicious traffic was coming in at 10 gigabits per second, which would make it a relatively large effort.
The WikiLeaks site is hosted in Sweden and devoted to releasing anonymously submitted documents."

IPad take to the road !

"Seoul - Apple's iPad went on sale on Tuesday in South Korea, three weeks after the local giant Samsung Electronics launched its rival tablet computer the Galaxy Tab in its home market.

One hundred invited pre-order customers, anxious to get their hands on the popular new gadget, lined up before dawn at a downtown Seoul branch of wireless operator KT, the sole Korean partner for iPhones and iPads.

First in line was Lee Jun-Young, 39, who slowly unwrapped the box with a wide grin on his face, then raised his iPad high above his head.

"I love it. I've waited for the iPad for such a long time," Lee, who said he also has an iPhone 4, told the newspaper Money Today. "I plan to use the iPad on my way to work and at home to study English."

KT said it had received 50 000 pre-orders for the iPad since November 17.

"We've started distributing it nationwide. Customers are receiving their pre-ordered iPads at the moment," said KT spokesperson Ham Young-Jin.

The company earlier announced the popular gadget would start selling at 218 000 won ($192) with a two-year contract, rising to 865 000 won for models with additional features.

Samsung Electronics, the biggest rival of Apple, has already introduced its 18cm screen Galaxy Tab in the US and Italy and aims to sell over a million units globally by the end of this year.

Apple has sold over seven million iPads worldwide since its January debut.

Piracy ? No problem !

"Washington - The US government is zeroing in on websites in the illegal sale of counterfeit goods and copyrighted works.

At a news conference on Monday, Attorney General Eric Holder said law enforcement authorities have seized 82 domain names of commercial websites, disrupting the sale of thousands of counterfeit items such as sports equipment and illegal copies of music and software.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton said the government is turning the tables on counterfeiters who prowl the back alleys of the internet

latest is that they also added "extensions" like chrome !
I know that Firefox came up with add-ons but operas extensions looks just like chromes extensions with the same icon on the right hand side instead of a toolbar!

Skin cancer, and the iphone app

"Sydney - Australians enjoying the summer sunshine can now know when it's time to cover up and avoid potentially cancer-causing ultraviolet rays thanks to a new iPhone application.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with more than 1 850 people dying of it each year - more than the number killed in road accidents, according to Cancer Council Australia. Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.

"What we're finding is that a lot of people are using temperatures and weather to predict when they need sun protection, but it's really the ultraviolet (UV) that's a problem - and you can't see that or feel it," said Sue Heward, SunSmart Manger at Cancer Council.
