MTN to give Broadband to rural areas

South Africa’s second largest mobile operator, MTN plans to roll out over 1 000 Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) base stations in rural areas for the next two years.

MTN plans to bring the much-needed broadband capacity to millions of its subscribers in the country and its operations across the continent and the Middle East. The company has made significant broadband investments in the West Africa Cable System (WACS), and in the East Africa Cable System (EASSy) undersea cables.

“The key limitations to rolling out infrastructure however remain the availability of high capacity transmission and in some cases grid power, which requires additional investment from telecoms players such as MTN.”
“As a company with operations in emerging markets, the availability of reliable energy sources in rolling and maintaining a reliable network is crucial.

“The unavailability of reliable energy supplies makes network rollout very expensive, thus dissuading potential investors from investing,” says Lambotharan.

Android applications for Windows phone 7

As promised back in April, Microsoft has today released an Android to Windows Phone API mapping tool for developers which will help developers port existing Android applications to the Windows Phone platform. Like its iPhone counterpart, the tool doesn't actually port your code for you automatically. Instead, what it provides is a list of API mappings that acts like a translation dictionary from one platform to the next. Read Write Web

The Sony Ericsson "PlayStation" Phone

The phone is the Sony Ericsson's Android software-based Xperia smartphones,but with an added controller that slides out from the left hand side. It has a 10.2 cm touch screen, including a 5.0 mega pixel camera.

The phone runs the newest Android platform, which is  Gingerbread.....

Windows has gotten a major lead when Nokia announced it was switching from there own mobile platform to The windows Phone 7 platform from Microsoft.

Skin cancer, and the iphone app

"Sydney - Australians enjoying the summer sunshine can now know when it's time to cover up and avoid potentially cancer-causing ultraviolet rays thanks to a new iPhone application. 

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with more than 1 850 people dying of it each year - more than the number killed in road accidents, according to Cancer Council Australia. Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. 

"What we're finding is that a lot of people are using temperatures and weather to predict when they need sun protection, but it's really the ultraviolet (UV) that's a problem - and you can't see that or feel it," said Sue Heward, SunSmart Manger at Cancer Council."

The app's gives many updates daily about the weather. and also alert you when the maximum UV levels are reached.
